Phoenix Youth Orchestra, a division of Brentwood's Orchestras for Young Musicians, presents a concert performance of Amahl and the Night Visitors at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church.

Amahl and the Night Visitors is a short opera by Gian Carlo Menotti. It’s a warm, heartfelt tale about generosity, faith, forgiveness, and the transformative power of kindness. The story follows Amahl, a poor, disabled boy who lives with his mother. One night, they receive unexpected visitors: the Three Kings, who are on their way to bring gifts to the newborn Christ child. Seeking shelter, the Kings stay in Amahl’s humble home. Amahl and the Kings connect through music, stories, and wonder. The mother, moved by the idea of a child receiving such rich gifts, tries to steal some gold to help her own struggling family. She’s caught, but instead of punishment, the Kings show compassion and forgive her. Inspired by their kindness and the miracle of the night, Amahl offers his own most precious belonging—his shepherd’s staff—to give to the Christ child. In a miraculous moment, his lameness is healed, and he joyfully leaves with the Kings to deliver his gift.
